Captain Cook's Legacy
The Earl of Pembroke is an authentic, square-rigged sailing vessel. It resembles the legendary HMS Endeavour, the ship on board which Captain Cook journeyed to Australia. It is known that Captain Cook’s ship was formerly named the “Earl of Pembroke” and it is for this reason that we honoured this beautiful square-rigger with this noble name.
The Re-birth of a Legend
The ship was incepted in 1945, in Sweden, when the keel of the vessel that we know as the “Earl of Pembroke” was laid. Architect and ship builder, Albert Svenson designed and completed the build in 1948, in Pukavik, Sweden. This traditional vessel, rigged as a three-masted schooner was named Orion and was one of the very last commercial sailing vessels to serve on the Baltic Sea.
The Longevity of Craftsmanship
For many decades, under different names, this old schooner was tirelessly hauling wood on the Baltic Sea. After years of reliable service, it retired in 1979.
The Beginning of a New Era
In 1985, the work began and finally, in 1994 in England, the three-masted ship was reborn. From this year onward it proudly resembled Captain Cook's legendary 18th century "Endeavour".
Modern Endeavours
After the completion of the works, this square-rigger became available for authentic sea adventure. It is currently licensed for voyages along the coast, but the possibility of longer excursions can be discussed. The Earl became a big-screen star after it featured in productions such as “Cloud Atlas” and “Alice in Wonderland”.
Under Scarlet Sails
In 2012 the “Earl of Pembroke” was endowed with one of the most romantic additions available to any sailing ship – scarlet sails. Those who saw this magnificent ship in its element say that it possesses an amazing aura and fires the watcher’s imagination.
