Scarlet Sails

The Book:

Written in 1923 by Alexander Grin, Scarlet Sails is a romantic tale of heart breaking loss, great love and dreams that came true. Such is the popularity of the story in Russian culture that at the end of every school year millions of Russians gather to celebrate the Scarlet Sails. This massive water show is regarded as the most spectacular part of the White Nights Festival.

 

It seems appropriate to celebrate and promote this great story using our beautiful square-rigger. Fortuitously “Orion” which was the original name of the “Earl of Pembroke” was also used as the name of one of the vessels in the Grin’s novel.
